Skilled nursing vs. nursing homes, assisted living, and acute rehab

How similarly named settings differ in clinical intensity and purpose.

Nursing home and SNF

People often use nursing home broadly. A Medicare-certified SNF designation describes a provider capable of covered skilled services; the same facility may also serve long-term residents.

Assisted living

Assisted living centers residential support and help with daily activities. It generally does not provide the daily facility-based skilled nursing or therapy that defines a SNF stay.

Acute inpatient rehabilitation

An inpatient rehabilitation hospital is a different, more intensive hospital-level setting. Ask the discharge team why one setting is clinically appropriate and what therapy intensity is expected.
